Inside the balm

Manjistha and ratanjoth — the two roots that give the lip balm its colour and its name.

Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia)

Manjistha

मञ्जिष्ठाRubia cordifolia

Indian madder — a climbing herb whose roots give Ayurvedic beauty preparations their earthy red.

Classical texts describe manjistha as a rakta-shodhaka, used in complexion and beauty rituals. It is the botanical heart of the lip balm.

Ratanjoth (Alkanna tinctoria)

Ratanjoth

रत्नज्योतिAlkanna tinctoria

Alkanet root — the source of a deep burgundy stain in oils, ghee and traditional lip preparations.

Ratanjoth has been used for centuries in Indian kitchens and cosmetics for its colour. In the lip balm it supplies a sheer, natural tint — no synthetic dye.
